When i was yonger we never gave heartworm med's to our dogs and they were okay without it.

The problem with not using the preventative is they only need to get bit by one infected mosquito which could happen if they go outside even once. The treatment is very hard on them. It is injections of an arsenic compound. I don't like the medication or its side effects but I would much rather do that then try to get rid of them once they go to the heart.
