You need to up your supervision and positive rewards. Treat him when he gets it right, ignore him and don't treat when he gets it wrong. Don't yell at him, or punish him, just be calm and steady and he'll figure it out.
What you are describing is what I believe is called "extinction" of a conditioned behavior. It usually occurs where there is a lack of reinforcement.
