Dogs do not like to potty where they sleep and eat. So if you reduce the space and put his food in there that should fix the problem. 
Also most dogs are on a schedule, once you figure that out, that will help as well. Sometimes i have to keep my baby out until he poops. Which sometimes is a long time. But now that I have him on a schedule he normally goes pretty quick. Normally when he wakes up in the morning and after he eats dinner.

  he only have enough room to stand, sit, laydown and turn around....i bought the smallest wire kennel for each of them...and it doesn't bother him to lay down, step on or roll around in his own poop...thanks.
