Here's what I did with the crate. I put the crate with the door off inside an xpen. I covered the entire floor of the pen with puppy pads so he couldn't make a big mess. I kept the xpen close to me so that everytime he cried I would talk to him and tell him he was okay. I would only take him out when he was not crying. Whenever he fell asleep outside of his crate, I would put him inside his crate. He quickly understood that this was a safe place to be and started going inside on his own. I think by not locking him in in the beginning, he was able to see that his crate was a positive thing. After a few months I was able to take away the xpen and he now goes in his crate without ever crying. Hope that helps!
