I think the consensus is pretty much, if you're going to spay, it is best to do it before a female's first heat (reduces a lot of risk factors by a LOT--e.g. mammary cancer, etc...), BUT if she's already in heat, you have to wait until after it's over to spay her. I'm not sure why, I just know that they don't normally spay a dog who is in heat currently. I'm sure someone else knows the why of that....
I'm so sorry, Dara311!! I know you're upset...hang in there! I'm sure the next 3 weeks won't be fun, but you'll get through them, then you can get it done. My vet told me that even though getting them spayed before their first heat reduces risk factors by a lot, getting them spayed before they are 4 yrs old still reduces those risks by a whole lot!! She'll be just fine!!
