It does look like we're torturing the little guy, but the spider part of the costume is actually pretty light. It's a Halloween prop sold at Walmart, and I just cut the wire legs shorter, but you might also be able to angle them more upwards. I just had it Velcroed on to a hoodie, but there are probably lots better ways to make it.
