Crate and training..... Both of our yorkies are crate trained and I think the trick to it is consistency. We started by keeping them in the crate with their fresh water each day. They were fed in the crate everyday. They quickly got used to only eating there. We played with them thru the day and would put them back in their crates. When we got up each morning we took them to their pee-pee pads and placed them right on it and told them to ""GO Pee-Pee and GO Potty" . We did this at the same time 6:00 AM every day. In the beginning they got off the pad and we just picked them up and placed them on the pad and gave them the command again. We did this as many times as needed until they did their business then back to the crate. After an hour we would do it again.....then after 1 1/2 hrs...then after 2 hrs and then 3 hrs until they got the idea. It took about 2 weeks of consistently working with them this way. They really responded well to all of this and to this day they do their business on command on their pads. Our two babies are now 3 y/o. BTW, both my husband and I used the same technique. I think they would be confused and would not respond well if one person did it one way and another person did it differently. Today, they both are trained wait to go once one of us gets home in the afternoon and lets them out of their crates. They sleep all day long in their crates and wait patiently b/c they know one of us will let them out and they feel safe while in there. Hope all of this helps. |
