When I was teaching Tuffy how to fetch I used a mint scented/flavored mini tennis ball and it worked like a charm to get him to grab it. The hardest part was getting him to bring it back and drop it. I taught him the command to drop it seperately so he could figure that out before putting it together with bringing it back. I used cheerios to get entice him to bring me back the ball and then drop it in my hand. He learned it really fast using the mint tennis balls.
