while it's more likely to be that he's just not used to it, it's definitely possible for almost any material to cause a mild contact dermatitis or just itching due to allergy. As an analogy, there are some people who can't wear leather watches-- they have a isolated pruritic reaction (itchiness) that may or may not cause erythema (skin redness). I'm one of those people- Leather on any other part of my body is fine, just not my wrist. It's the same with my brother, so there has to be some genetic aspect.
