"A drunken Bronx man fighting with his new wife took out his anger on her dog early Wednesday, shooting the defenseless beagle with a BB gun before stabbing it to death, police said.

Brian McCafferty, 28, plunged a knife into the dog - which his wife had named Jerry - several times in a drunken rage at the couple's Throgs Neck apartment at 5:45 a.m., police said.

McCafferty admitted to investigators that he was upset because his wife, whom he married last month, stormed out of their house when he came home intoxicated, a police source said.

McCafferty shot the dog once with the air rifle and then used a kitchen knife to fatally stab the animal.

When McCafferty's wife returned to the Patricia Lane home just before 6 a.m., she called 911 after she saw the dog lying lifeless in a pool of blood.

"They had him in handcuffs and put him in the back of the ambulance," said neighbor John Barone.

"He had blood on his shirt, but it didn't look like his," Barone said. "It looked like it belonged to whoever - or whatever - he killed."

McCafferty, who accidentally sliced his own hand while slashing the dog, was treated at Jacobi Medical Center and then arrested, officials said.

He was charged with injuring an animal, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. McCafferty had been arrested once before for assault, but he had never previously been charged with attacking his wife or her dog, a police source said."

it is so horrible and sad for the poor pup... RIP.....It sickens me knowing that people out there will take a dogs life just because they are upset at a spouse....why do that to a helpless doggy????!
