Hi, my Yorkie Cara and I are new to this forum. Cara my little sweetheart will be 4 on Nov 29. I got her at 6 months old as a rescue. When I took her I knew she had been in my opinion 'abused' by the 5 yr old child who owned her. Cara is a beautiful little girl, however she has never been what would be called a typical Yorkie. Even my Vet has always referred to her as a very laid back Yorkie. Cara never did learn to jump up on furniture, people etc., or to walk up and down stairs. If it is one step up she does fine, bust she has never mastered the stairs in our 2 storey house nor has she ever indicated she wanted to try. Cara's normal weight is 5 1/2 lbs. so she is not a real big little girl.

At the end of August I noticed Cara was having balance problems so we took her to our Vet. They found she did have an ear infection and the Vet thought that it was deep enough to be causing the balance problems. For a few days Cara did much better and then she began to fall again. Back to the Vet we went and they checked her heart and some other things which I cannot remember right now. Everything checked out fine. My Vet was very concerned and told me we had to see a specialist ASAP. The next day we drove 3 hrs to the Vet. college closest to us. Cara had gone considerable down hill. She was semi 'coherent' and was barely able to stand. Upon initial examination it was believed she had vestibular disease, however she was scheduled for a CT scan the next AM. Through all of this Cara was eating and drinking fine.
We left her at the hospital over night and they called me the next day to tell me she had a massive amount of fluid on her brain. It was so severe they really could not see her brain.
Ahead to now---Cara has been on meds since the end of Aug and she is doing quite well considering her condition. She does seem to have bad days but for the most part she does well. She has lost a lot of the use of her back legs and it is believed that it is due to brain damage from the fluid pressure. I can take her outside and let her walk around some as long as she has on a harness dress and I help support her. She is not able to run around the house freely like she used to and when I am not home she stays in a small room that I have padded with crib bumper pads.
My question is, has anyone else on here had experience with this in their Yorkie? I know every day is guarded with her and I cherish each and every day with her. She is my baby girl and I make what concessions I have to for her. I have been warned that the prognosis is not good for her but she has amazed the Vets with her response to the meds and how well she has been doing. (sorry this is soooo long) (Cara also has 3 Schnauzer sisters)
