If it's his hard food that he's not eating so well, there could be a tooth issue. A visit to the vet may be in order.

It also could be that at some point he got scared by the other pets and just doesn't want to risk being out of his crate while you aren't there.

How is your other dog adjusting? I know it sounds corny, but walks really do amazing things to pull a 'pack' together. Even if it's just for 10 -15 minutes a day, walking them will help to bind them together and form a secure group. It will also reinforce to your guy that your roommate is part of the pack and will watch out for him.
