AVG is the best freebie and there is no need to buy and you always get the updates for free. In addition to that you should run adaware which will take out the spyware. Then last but least you should run your disk defrag every maybe three or so months to keep your pc tuned up. For the AVG and the Adaware go to download.com.
I have a friend that runs his own computer business and they do security and the like for many big firms and this is the stuff he told me to use. A couple months back my kids pc had tons of pop up and virus problems. I ran the Norton that I pay for and it did nothing. I was ready to pitch the pc. Then I though to ask my friend and he gave me this stuff. I ran the AVG first and that caught all the junk and cleaned that pc. I was so frustrated that I was feeling violent.
After I saw how well that went I removed the norton and never looked back.
