My 8 year old, Jasmine, was like your dog. She was at least two, maybe three before she finally figured out that when I threw her toy, the right thing to do was bring it back. It was funny, but frustrating - she expected me to go get it and would look at me oddly, even cocking her head to the side, when I didn't.
She really loves to wrestle with her stuffed toy (only one, she has ignored all others), so I just kept playing tug of war and keep-away with her and that toy, then would throw the toy and say, "Get your toy, Jasmine, get your toy" in a really excited voice. If she didn't get it, we stopped playing until the next time I felt like trying. Eventually, she brought it back on her own. Now *laugh*, I can tell her at any time "Get your toy, Jasmine!" and she will go find it and bring it to me.
Good luck and have patience, Curtis! |
