I remember someone else having the same problem getting a diagnosis of sarcoptic mange. Seems their vet insisted the condition was a allergy dermatitis also, and it took them insisting on a skin scrape before the correct diagnosis was made.
Anyway, I glad you got your answer and can now begin the recovery
