My recipe came from the Journal of Nutrition and calls specifically for bone meal. All the recipes for dogs with liver disease from the Journal had the supplements included for each particular recipe. Some called for bone meal, others called for dicalcium phosphate and calcium carbonate.
I think the key is following a specific recipe exactly as written.
