I don't know about wives tales but the best site I ever used was fertilityfriend.com. I also used the clearblue fertility monitor (SO worth the money) since you can only get pregnant 3-4 days out of the month. Sadly, we lost ours on our first try, but we are planning to try again soon. Babycenter.com forums are also a great place to talk to others trying.
