I am away at work for 7.5 hours per day. I think the key is a 15-30 min walk before I leave and again sometime in the evening. When they are really young the crate works great. I found that to be too long to leave her in the crate when she got older and slept less. I leave her in my bedroom now with lots of thing to chew. I think it helps to teach them to be independant, take dog training , and let them sleep in your room since you are gone much of the day.
