Put them up on the counter where they are pretty close to you, with no distractions. With practice, they will get used to you putting bows in, and learn that the more cooperative you are, the quicker it is over

I don't know what kind of bands you are using, but I use the non-latex kind. They are the best bands I've found...and I have received many compliments on them. I remove Darcy's by cutting, or if I am changing in the same day...I just slide the end of a rat tail comb under it, and it comes right off...

here is a description of what I use:

These are our highest quality elastics. They are made from premium quality, heavy weight, medical-grade synthetic poly-isoprene. This space-age material out-performs all other elastic bands. Better performance without the risk of allergic reaction. Unlike Latex, these are clear to make a better presentation and they will not absorb water.

Feels and works like Latex, but with better results. We are one of the first companies to offer this new advanced grooming band. Give these a try and you will be glad you did. We are introducing them at the same low price
.

The e-bay seller is here: 500 Latex-Free Dog Grooming Bands - CLEAR, 3/8" - eBay (item 260302594829 end time Oct-25-08 20:19:37 PDT). I also sell smaller quantities in my store!
