I live in Canada and here is a piece from a local paper:

Cosmetic surgery banned for dogs in New Brunswick

FREDERICTON — New Brunswick veterinarians will soon no longer perform so-called cosmetic surgeries on animals, including docking the tails of dogs or cropping their ears to make them stand at point.

The New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association passed a bylaw at its annual general meeting on the weekend that bans surgeries performed purely for cosmetic reasons.

The surgeries are typically requested by purebred dog owners who plan on showing their dogs.

“It’s now considered unprofessional conduct for a veterinarian in New Brunswick to perform cosmetic surgery on an animal,” said Jim Berry, a member of the association.

The ban will take effect in six months.

I don't really have a preference and I also have two Springers with docked tails. BUT to those that say that is the way they're suppose to be (when referring to Yorkies tails being docked) I take exception with that remark. If that is the way they are suppose to be than God (or whomever/whatever you believe in) would have made them that way. Evolution has not made the Yorkies tail shorter, people have. Not looking to start an argument, but let's face it, it's done because someone decided many, many years ago that they liked the look of the cropped tail.

Just my opinion. Again, not looking to start an argument, just something to think about.
