You might have to go back to square one and crate him at night and don't let him in the bedroom during the day.

It isn't just the smell that makes them go back there. if it were then training would be easy. It's just that he has decided that this is where he should poop and no one has caught him doing it to tell him any different.

Also does he eat when your husband comes home? If so I would stop letteing him eat. As a rule an adult dog should not have tro poop in the night.
You could try not letting him have anything to eat after 4 in the after noon to see if that helps too.
