I think a parakeet is a great suggestion, especially a handfed one. If she wants something more to look at, a pair of finches or a canary would be good. A lot of people suggest a cockatiel as a good starter bird but I'm not that familiar with them. Ringneck doves also make great pets as they are naturally tame. They might be harder to find though.
I would not suggest a parrotlet and definitely not a macaw! Parrotlets are very nippy and can be territorial.
As with dogs, it's best to purchase a bird from a breeder versus a pet store.
