I'm in Missouri but many of my puppies (I raise 2 litters per year) go to the L.A. and San Francisco area's. Our prices are usually in the $1000-$1500 range plus shipping. The families that have our puppies tell us they expect to pay twice that much in state.
Buying out of state or out of the country for that matter is sometimes a necessity, but it's always best to do your homework. Find a reputable breeder first....then wait until the person you trust has the puppy you want. Yes it means you have to wait, but all the best things are worth waiting for.
