You might want to explain to your roommate that what she tried to teach your puppy and what he actually learned are two different things. Obviously she was trying to BULLY him into being house broken...this doesn't work. What she actually taught him is that she is borderline insane and should never be trusted, he should hide in the closet to POOP because otherwise she'll freak and hit him, and food isn't something he'll always have, it can be taken arbitrarily from him for reason's he doesn't understand. A consistent schedule, proper communication, and a routine involving successful trips to potty and rewards are how to house train a puppy. Every time he gets spanked he'll be moved further from the goal.
