Yes, there will be some form of social security and/or medicare when we all get old. It's hard to believe, but it's true, that about 40% of older adults live off social security alone - no other pension or income. You can't think that our government will just cut off social security and put all these elders out on the street, do you??? Of course, social security may be means based in the future, and as such, those who have incomes or pensions may make too much money for social security. But you just never know what may happen between now and then and I think it is best to be prepared.
So yes, I do think it is important that you try to accumulate enough social security credits. You just never know what might happen along the way.
