Have you tried training him to know you'll come back.

Put him in his pen, leave for 1 minute, come back and give him praise and or a treat. Increase time between separations. Plan on doing this over the period of at least a month, and don't rush it. If he has a bad reaction to the separation time, at any point in the training, reduce it, and work up slowly.
