The True Blood series so far is following the first book pretty closely. If you read the first book, you will find out some of the mysteries the show has presented so far. I've read all the books Charlaine Harris has written in this series, and they are great. If youre worried that reading the books will ruin the show for you, you could wait until the first season is over then read the series of books. The second and third books get a lot more interesting, and a lot more involved with Sookie and the vampire world.
I wonder if the tv series will introduce "Bubba" at some point. It will be a fun little suprise for you.
