if it looks like rice then it is maggots and do not worry as i made that mistake and took mine to the vet and they got shots when they did not need it
i was a new dog owner then and came home and the worms were in food bowl as i left kibble down too long
now i change daily and there had been a fly in house day before -- learned the hard way
not sure about the balls though
