Our girl uses both the pad and outdoors. She was pad trained, but then we took her on vacation and did not want to use them in our motel room. We had a ground floor room across from a park, so we walked her there, and she just instinctively went on the grass. Try walking your dog regularly where there are grassy areas. Walking stimulates them to go as well as other dog smells that are in the grass.
As for going on the potty pad, I've noticed that they do not seem to want to go on a pad that is fairly soiled, so they will go elsewhere. We have to change the pad about every other day, when the weather keeps her and us in. And as far as going on the edge, unless you have a holder with edges around the pad, I'm not sure how they are supposed to tell if their butts are actually over the pad when they go. I mean, the pad is totally flat, so how do they know where the boundaries are without an edge of some sort. Just the way I see it.
