I use one of these: PetEdge: Lebistro Waterers

My two dogs and my cat use it and theres hardly a mess on the floor. (Maybe a few drops here and there.) Its a lot less messy than just a bowl. The bowl part is shallow and wide so they dont have to stick their head in it.
