Why don't you read the first one in the series and decide for yourself?
They are were written for young adults, but I really enjoyed them.
Has your son read the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini? My son loved Harry Potter also and enjoys them. The author wrote the first book draft when he was 15 I believe.
