I think that was sort of an old wives tale that they should have a litter. If you do the spay early enough before the hormones change up that is supposed to be better for them. Personally I wouldn't breed her at that age. For the most part dogs don't have that baby urge like humans might.
I think your doing the best thing for her and I wish you both a safe spay and a speedy recovery.
