I have scissors that have a rounded blunt end to it. That way you don't have to worry at all. However most of the time I like to let mine grow so that it goes into the top knot. If you don't do that and prefer the short puppy cut then you would want to trim around the eye area. Plus sometimes I think its better if the dog can see really well. It takes awhile for the hair to not get into the dogs eye.
