I am not sure where even to start with this.
A trainer that not concerned about safe training of a dog.. hummm??!!!
Second any trainer that thinks a leash is for controling a dog is not a trainer I want near my dog?
A leash is a tool to help keep a dog safe. A dog should walk beside you and want to be with you not held there by a leash.
A leash is not for control or use as a way to pop it and teach heal.
A leash if a trainer knows what she is doing never needs to be tight and should be able to teach a client not to have a dog pulling on a leash every!!!!
If this is just basic training for a pet dog tell her to get over her self suck it up and let you train in harmness.. it is your dog and your money and you are not risking your dog !

Now if it for the ring well that dog should already not be walking pullling to be working toward trialing already and if it is go start at the basics and if not then she needs to teach that and it not by leash popping!
Second yes if you are heading to the ring you will need a collar but you can train on harness until the pulling stops and switch and proof that.
I also check and see I thought you can use a harness on a dog as long as it not a no pull one... I know you can in rally O on dogs.
