They should be kept seperated, then when it is time (she is ovulating) then you need to put them together with HANDS on supervision.
One reason they need help is because the male is generally smaller than the female and he will need help reaching her. Another reason is because once they tie, if the female gets scared, she may try to run and can hurt the male by dragging him
