For the first 3-6 months, I had each girl in their own ex-pen, in the same room and right next to each other. They each had their own food, water, toys, beds...When I was home and could supervise, I let them out in the same room together. When I could not supervise, it was back in the ex-pens. Eventually they became quite inseparable. When I saw them snuggling together, playing with the same toys and eating out of the same dish, I knew it was time for them to become roomates. Now, I only use the ex-pen if I need to keep them secured, such as when a repair man comes. Otherwise they have run of the living room which is gated off from the rest of the house.
