Your depiction of the mad dash is comical. I wonder if there is any yorkie owner who has not experienced such vigor. A couple of thoughts:

1. Make sure your yorkie is getting enough exercise. Yorkies, contrary to popular belief, are not simple little lap dogs. They love to run and play fetch (indoor fetch will do if you can't go out) and need daily time to romp and run.

2. Teach the basic commands "sit", "come", and "leave it". Use treats and lots of lots of praise.

3. Use only positive reinforcement. Yorkies are very sensitive. Yelling or other such means of intimidation will not work in your favor, at all.

4. Accept your part as an owner. Clean your apt floors thoroughly. What you leave your yorkie will attempt to eat. Not his fault. It's just the way it is. An emergency trip to the vet will be one costly lesson.

5. Since you are off to a poor start, have treats easily accessible. When your yorkie has something in his mouth, say "leave it" then offer the treat. He should promptly leave whatever it is that he's picked up in favor of something much better. Then praise him.

6. Have enough raw hide chew sticks on hand. Your pup has a need to chew; he'll be losing his baby teeth and new teeth will be coming in. Providing a healthy alternative is key.

Learn as much as you can about the breed and keep posting. Lots of friendly, compassionate advice here.

Good luck.
