Try using mousse in your hair before you dry it. When you curl with the iron make sure you take small sections of hair...maybe you are taking too much hair at a time. .Or...after you make a curl roll it with your fingers up to your head and bobby pin it to your head until the curl has cooled. My daughter is a hairdresser and this is what she does for customers with thick hair...Then use a good hair spray..
