Could be possible that he could have dug himself a little hole under his fence that his parents don't know about, and he has access to a doggie door while they are gone. He may just scoot back in whenever he needs a drink or something, then come back out to visit good people like yourself.
Maybe do as was suggested with treats and leash or go door to door to see if anyone knows where he lives.
