DC is great. I grew up right outside the city - and relocated back due to the split - but I have to say, I found an apartment and a job rather easily. Because almost everything is affected by the government, the area is pretty recession proof, making it a nice respite from the economic state of the rest of the US! Let me know if you are thinking of coming down!
