Vets get very little nutrition training in school, so they aren't the best people to advise you. You can talk to a canine nutritionist or study online. There is no reason to feed a Royal Canin vet diet in this case in my opinion.
What do you want to do long-term (kibble, canned, homecooked or raw)?
If your vet is concerned about your pup's teeth, the best thing you can do is brush them everyday.
