Another day, another question

I'm thinking of changing my vet. I love my current vet, but they're (a couple) really quiet and I have to ask and ask and ask if I wanna know something. They're really nice, polite, but a little too quiet for my taste. It seems that they don't give advice if I don't ask

What makes me wanna change is because I have strong suspicions that both my dogs has ear mites, and that they have had the symptoms of having it when they came the last time (last month),but neither said anything about the possibility of them having ear mites. I did ask them why they seem to be scratching alot, and their advice was, "you can buy the ear drops sold in pet stores". Now, I thought that was suspicious, but the more I think about it the more I worry about their skills and knowledge as vets.

My question is, are there any way you can ascertain whether a vet is good?
Maybe a list of questions you can ask them before deciding to acquire their services? Say, if you ask them whether Science Diet is good food or bad, and they say it's good, then you'll know something's up?

Pls help. I do not want to bring my dogs to a vet that will not treat them well - and ear mites are annoyingly difficult to eradicate.
