I think it's normal and can have an odor if not cleaned every day. My pooch has runny eyes...You might make sure that the hairs are trimmed close to their eyes....that can cause more drainage... I just use what alot of people use...warm wash cloth.. Daizy's face can tend to smell also because her mustache tends to get into her food. So that makes me have to wash her face even more often.
