Back in my work-away-from-home days, Baxter would do that too. I would look for him, and turn around and find him sitting patiently already inside his kennel. He actually preferred his kennel to being shut up in the bathroom with the kennel door left open..I think it made him feel more secure...I left the TV on.
He is still my smarty pants...when I accidentally close the inside door where Cooper can't come in thru the Doggie Door, he will go to the door and bark, and then come to us and Bark..Cooper will just stand there and wait for us...he won't even scratch. The same thing when our infant nephew is here, if baby cries he can't stand it...he will find us and bark, the run back and sit beside baby until we come check him out.
He also barks at his food and water bowl when he is out of either. I know he has a million human words that he just wishes he could speak.
Cooper is not as intelligent, but is 3x as "lovey" as Baxter...which is just as special to me. Darcy is a Princess, and I get the sense that she is annoyed with all of us at times
