In Va you get the questionaire to fill out....then later you are sent a letter for the following month that states you may have jury duty on a particular day of the week, you have to call the day before and listen for your name. If your name isn't on the recorded list...you don't go. If it is on the list and you don't report....a sheriff's deputy will eventually find you and escort you to the courthouse where you're fined for being in contempt of court. You do not serve multiple times...it's only once then you are exempt for 3 years although sometimes you get the questionaire...then you just write down the date you serve. Showing up and not being chosen...is considered serving here too.
The only exemptions here for not serving -
don't speak English, a nursing mother, caregiver for a disabled person, or your position at work is so vital...the business would close with out you.
Side note - My mother was supposed to serve Federal Grand Jury Duty...in Janauary....unfortunately she passed away in Dec. Come January....they call looking for my mom. I tell them...she died. So this idiot on the other end...asks...why didn't she call and tell us that ????
