I have a 3 1/2 month old yorkie who came to a home with already 3 cats and a boxer dog. One of my cats immediately made sure that her space was not to be disturbed, and Pix, the yorkie, doesn't get anywhere near here. The other two cats, though, are younger and sometimes allow some chasing and play time, until they get annoyed and want their privacy back. Pix is learning, and the cats have the HUGE advantage of being able to just climb anything and let her bark away...
They will all come to a balance eventually, but we do have a lot of fun with all these guys here
