I have had the Petmate fountains, and the pumps always go bad on them. I much prefer the Drinkwell brand fountain. The pumps are stronger and last longer and if you buy the cleaning kit, they are much easier to clean. Changing the filter depends on how many animals you have. I have four cats drinking out of one and change that filter about once every two weeks. I got my Drinkwell from Doctors Foster and Smith. My Petco/Petsmart sell the replacement filters.
