I think a higher protein is more species appropriate to the canine diet. The only time you should really have to be concerned about feeding lower is if there is kidney/liver/pancreas disease. When I was feeding kibble (now feed raw), I fed a 42% kibble - Orijen - and thought it was wonderful.
Have you ever read
Orijen's white paper? If you are asking about appropriate protein levels, it's probably a great time to read this - it's really a super paper. It will dispel a lot of the misinformation out there.
