Sexually males reach "puberty" at around 6-7 months. Generally males are neutered at 6 months of age. I would still keep them seperate or discuss the possibility of neutering him now with your vet.
Perhaps the vet would allow you to place the cost of the surgery on account...and make payments that way vs charging anything to your credit card.
