It is harder to see on my yorkie than my chihuahua, but the part of the nail that doesn't have quik is shinier than the nail where there is quik. When I look at the nail from the side I see from the foot a dull section and then shiny. The hair kind of gets in the way and makes it difficult but it is the only way I can tell. I do leave a little past the quik to make sure I don't go too short. Good Luck I have read where someone puts thier dog's nail in a stocking to keep the hair pushed back, but I haven't tried it yet. I just do it often and not very much at a time.
